St. Croix is one of the three “Emeralds of the Sea” that make up the US Virgin. It is also the home of the majority of the members of Generation Now!. St. Croix has been ruled under seven flags and currently exists as a Territory of the United States of America. It is a beautiful place with a serene environment and hospitable people. The island was originally an agrarian society and was known as the breadbasket of the Caribbean. The export sugar, rum, cotton, molasses and hard woods made St. Croix a very valuable colony and asset to the countries that ruled over her.
During the late 1960’s St. Croix made a leap into the industrial age with the addition of Harvey Alumina and the Hess Oil refinery. Even though, Alumina is no longer produced on the island the refining business has grown. Today, HOVENSA (formerly Hess Oil) is one of the largest refineries in the western hemisphere and is the largest private employer in the Virgin Islands.
Within the last 20 years St. Croix has been the victim of two major hurricanes that severely damaged the economic capacity of the island. Recovery from the impact of the storms has been an uphill battle and the downturns of the American economy have not helped but it seems like things are making a change for the better.
In recent years St. Croix has been making strides to diversify its economy and revive both its towns, Christiansted and Frederiksted, to economic prosperity.
With the addition of a host of financial firms and the prospect of the construction of at least 2 major hotels on the horizon our future should be bright. We still have a lot of changes but the spirit of a people can never be underestimated.
